PS3 Media Server Question

Hi

I have a few questions about PS3 Media Server.

Tell me if I understand correctly. A MKV file has to be transcoded in order for it to play on my PS3?

Also are there files that dont have to be transcoded that I should look out for as an alternative to MKV?
