Default PHP help

I know HTML and I want to do my own PHP Hit Counter.
Now I know there is a lot of step by step PHP Hit Counters on the net but they don't realy explane say what they meen wen they tell you to do something.

Like if they say you need a Veriable they don't say what it is or what it does.

Can anyone tell me of a good step by step how to for PHP Hit Counters and that they realy are good for explaning??

As above please stop double posting.

I'm not being harsh when I say this but if you don't know what a variable is on php, then you'd do better to read a book or a website that went over the absolute basics before trying to do something like a hit counter.
