Default Outlook Purge question

I was setting one of my emails and it has a check box saying
"Purge items when switching folders while online"
What does that mean? By meaning I mean in Layman's terms with some sort of example or scenario to describe it.

Yep its on IMAP, but what I don't understand is the terminology of that statement.
