but with virtualbox you need either a cd for the os or an iso file.

i find that it is more useful for testing out linux distros on a windows xp computer

If you want to run your games in linux I'd say buy the windows version and use WINE.

because what you have to do is set up linux and then set up your games where as xp sets it self up more used os and more easily for you to use and on linux your games might not work
