Can you post your intentions kind of like JCB was asking and we can probably send you in the right direction i was thinking along the lines of ubuntu if you will just do day to day things..

I'm going to second Ubuntu , it is the easiest to switch to from windows or Mac OS

I would reccomend ubuntu then it will probably meet your standards for everything you need it to do.

Ubuntu, probably the 10.04 Long-term support edition if you can find it.

A very good windows alternative based on the Debian OS.

I wouldn't suggest the LTS for a desktop.
