Old Laptop Won't Start

Hi,

I have dug out an Acer Aspire 5580 and discovered it doesn't start, it was rather slow previously but it always worked. It gets past the Acer screen but it stays black forever after there. I have tried every trick in the book to get it to work but to no avail. Does anybody know how to wipe it all and start again?

Have you tried resetting to defaults in the BIOS and going from there? Can you get it to boot from CD? If you literally can't do anything with it it sounds like a possibly dead motherboard, in which case you're out of luck. If you can at least get it to boot from CD, grab something like Knoppix, boot from that and then you can have a play around to see if the hardware is still in tact (or not!) All is not lost if this is the case though, if something like the hard drive has gone, it's pretty easy to swap out.
