you have to remember that there were 5 years or so between xp and vista so more demanding specs were going to be a certainty. If a new os was out every 2 years the jump between each wouldnt be so great.

Exactly. When MS was coming out with new OS's almost every two years, the requirements didn't vary much, but now that they've had a long time to work on it, they could demand a lot more.
