Default .Net Components

Hey Guys,

Just a question for the guys that have dabbled in programming before.
Winforms is my home and it's where I feel comfortable I've used a good variety of third party component packs like Telerik, Janus, Dundas and DevExpress.

My question is they supply items like a Gauge control that has amazingly smooth needle action, like you might see in a car, the speedometer needle goes from 0 - 120 etc it's really smooth.

How do they do this?
I've tried replicating it and putting a timer in so every 20 milliseconds (tried 5, 50 100 etc) the needle moves 1 in value and it's fine with 1 gauge, put 10 gauges on a panel and it grinds to a stutter hault.
However animate the gauge using their prebuilt animation and it runs seamlessly.

What witchcraft are they using?
He who has never failed has never attempted anything worth succeeding at.
