need help with Windows

My Windows installation has just completely screwed up. I don't know why cos it was completely fine in the morning but when I booted into Windows later, everything was fine until the login screen. I clicked the icon and then the system just hung at the "loading system settings" part. How can I recover Windows without doing a complete reformat and reinstall?

Start the system using the 'Last Known Good Configuration' option.

It brings up a menu with several options. One of which is to start the computer with the last known good configuration.

I doubt the last known good configuration option will work. You should just boot off your winxp cd and choose the "repair" option by pressing R. This will re-install critical windows components, but will NOT format your HD, meaning you won't lose your personal files and apps.

If you can get into safe mode run a system file checker, from a terminal.
