ok, i had windows xp on my computer. i had lots of files on it that i need. when installing ubuntu to the hard drive and resizing the windows partition, the windows partition somehow got deleted. so i then installed ubuntu and right after installed backtrack, which deleted ubuntu.

is there any way at all that i could get my old windows partition back or at least some of the files.

I would try to use a knoppix rescue disk to recover your deleted files, and then save them onto a usb stick, or another harddrive. If you reformatted the harddrive when you installed ubuntu, theres a very slim chance of recovering anything though.

Good luck, that's all I can say. Once the drive has been formatted, unless you have forensic equipment and a lab, the chance of recovery is very small.

There are programs that will recover your lost files, even if you've formatted your hard drive. The key to data recovery is if the files have been over written.

You see, when you delete a file, or format your hard drive, the file is not actually "gone" so to speak- it's just not referenced anymore, making it seem "gone". Now, if you create a file, or install another OS, it's going to write on the hard drive, and since the data you had, while actually still there, is not recognized by anything, it will be over written, and then it is gone.

I've been able to recover files from a hard drive that has been formatted more than once. I believe it was Easy Recovery Pro that I used- but there are more programs out there than that- do a search in Google for data recovery, but just understand that any program you download as a trial, will let you see the files, but not recover them- this will reassure you that some of them, if not all, are still there. Good luck.

I suggest you use Partition Table Doctor to resolve your problem. The software provides very useful functions:
Backup partition table, Restore partition table, Rebuild
partition table, undelete partition, Fix boot sector,
rebuild mbr,etc.

First thing I recommend you download the demo version of
Partition Table Doctor.( http://www.ptdd.com/download.htm )

Run the program and select "Rebuild Partition Table",
then choose "Interactive" mode. If you can find the partition
you need, that is Partition Table Doctor can help you. Otherwise,
Partition Table Doctor cannot help you.
