Might I recommend Debian linux?
It has an awesome number of packages available. Including lightweight desktop environments that should have no trouble running on that hardware.

Also, I might suggest heading to a bargain bookstore and looking for a book on the Linux command line. If you really want to become a power Linux user, you have to learn your way around the command line.
