Default Laptop help

What's good world how's everyone, well I got my hands on an old dell latitude d800 it was running windows xp pro I went a head and tried wiping the hd with dban half way trough the laptop restarts and doesn't let it finish then I proceeded to trying to installing xp again same thing happen any thoughts on what the problem might be? I'm thinking of installing some Linux maybe python to mess around and try to learn here are the specs: 1g ram 150g hd, pentium m 1.7 ghz any help or suggestions is much appreciated thank you.

So you are trying to format a partition to ext3 (or something to that effect) for Linux?

What did you do with DBAN? How are your systems set up?
