Hi there.

I am new here. We are the Newest Nick team, video makers, video gamers, helpers of Gateway 3DS, etc.

But enough intro. Let's say I have a problem back at the outer regions of our company (my room).

I have an old Windows XP computer downstairs at the basement that's NOT full of viruses (But my mom thinks it is because I have had viruses on that computer a few times since 2010, luckly, a guy named Mickey fixed the computer several times. His name IS NOT MICKEY MOUSE.) and wanting to recover some files from it. I had an idea to move the computer and it's plugins (which was in a box) and plug everything in so I can get into it and recover some old files, like the Super Mario Bros. X game, Super Mario All Stars ++ that had Super Mario Bros. levels completed and it was HARD WORK. I wanted to recover that game because I wanted it more remastered and edited from my 2nd remake I created on my Windows 8.1 computer. Then I just realized, "I need an Flash Drive!" So I tried to look for one in my room. The door was shut, because I thought mom could get me in trouble for what I done to recover some old files for our company. After some lazy looking, MOM came in. She was VERY MAD. She told me to move all that dang stuff outta my room, that things full of viruses (and YES, she said that)! Not everything's full of viruses. You have to be a DUMB PERSON to believe everything on that computers full of viruses. She unplugged everything, and my computer was sent back to the basement. I was so sad. I just wanted some old stuff that's not recovered yet! But she, my mom, UGHHHH! She just HAD to be statistic about it. She also turned off my WINDOWS 8.1, and I was just so mad. She sent me to Melody (my sister) to work on putting away the christmas bush lights after that stupidness. Now I wonder how am I gonna recover those files NOW, like an IDE to USB drive, or to do it again, but put it in the basement this time, OR give up. And school starts on the 5th, so... don't know what to do now... if you have any comments to give about how to fix this mess, leave down a reply. :(

Hahaha. Your post made me laugh. Outer regions (my room), Mickey mouse and your mom. :)

You can easily just turn it on and withdraw the files you need. But i guess that's not good enough for your mom.
Is it the fact that you turn on the computer that makes her scared, or is it the files you withdraw that she is afraid of?

If it's the files.
Just tell her that your Antivirus is up to date and you are gonna scan your USB drive when you have recovered the files.
You are also gonna unplug the internet from your computer (just so she doesn't think the virus will go looking for other computers in your house.... which most virus actually don't do or even can if they are outdated. There are firewalls between each computers and an outdated virus will NOT go though it. Virus get's outdated quickly because of security updates and that virus (if it even has one) is from the Windows XP age. It's almost impossible for a virus to stay effective for so long)

If it's the turn it on part she is afraid of:
Well... Explain to her that the computer is not gonna suddenly grow arms with claws. It's just a computer

She really don't have to worried so much.
Show her this post. Maybe it will change her mind. I am educated and i work with computers.

I agree. Viruses are not all that common if you search "safely" on the internet, and I use that term loosely. And if she does get a virus, just download malwarebytes onto a flashdrive and install it on the infected PC and remove the issue. She shan't worry as much as she does.... :whistling:

And if she thought that unplugging and moving the PC to the basement was going to remove the virus, bah.

And I will be 100% honest..... I work as a computer technician, and most of the viruses we see are from porn sites.... and movie downloads.

Sounds like to me, you spend too much time on the computer. Seems mom ain't as dumb as you make her out to be. I would venture she wants you to get off your duff and do something else.

Computers are like my flying hobby. It can take over your life if you let it. All things in moderation. Now go help your sister with the lights...

Hold on a second man.... This is a computer forum.... The last piece of advise we should give is to stay OFF of a PC

Who knows, maybe she really IS that paranoid, but your argument makes sense Seti.

If it's ok or not for her to decide if her son can't get some harmless files back is not my business. But he is gonna use the computer anyway. Why not let him get his files and make some rules about when and when not he can use the computer. I had that for a while when i was a teen. I couldn't use the computer when i came home from school before i asked mom if there was something i could help with.
That all changed when she got a job again. lucky me :D

I wonder if she's under the impression that some how, computer viruses can spread to humans? Why else would she be so paranoid and wants the thing kept in the basement.

What you should really do, is get it in the basement, get it on your home network, and get remote desktop set up - so you can access it whenever you need to - remotely.
