How do I run the check disk utility?

I am running windows XP and I got a message to run the check disk utility but I've never done it before. I have a corupt file.

I'm not very good with pc's so please explain so I can understand.

Is there any other infor you need about my PC?

Chkdsk is a command-line tool that checks volumes on your hard disk drive for problems. The tool then tries to repair any problems that it finds. From time to time Windows will ask you to do when you are starting up.
