The only way I personally know of to really restore a hard drive to its original state (providing it's not actually damaged) is to reformat and restore.

However, there are some things you can do to clean it up quite a bit (and do them regularly as maintenance):

-- Delete all temp files (c:\windows\temp\*.tmp)

-- Delete temporary internet files (c:\windows\temporary internet files\*.*)

-- If you use I.E., click on Tools, Internet Options, Delete Files, select "delete all off-line content", click OK

-- Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Systems Tools, Disk Cleanup

-- Download AdAware, check for updates, run it and remove whatever it finds

-- Download Diskeeper and defragment the hard drive

Question

another good adware removal program would be Spysweeper...but you have to buy it. but i heard there are keygenerators for this, so you don't have to buy it but i don't know where to get one.

another thing would be to run Window's disk defragmentor.

Default Ntfs

what OS do you have?

if its 98/95 or ME then it may be corrupt.

the checkdish should fix it.

If you have win 2k or XP, tell windows to convert it to NTFS (that is convert the file system from FAT32 to NTFS)

its far more stable and secure.

Also.. do a clean disk, and defrag too

if you add/remove programs a lot that might be the problem
