Default HDD Change

Im looking to change my HDD, but not sure as to how the operating system will work. Would I be able to just re-install the original copy of xp that I got with the system or would I have to buy a new copy? Also what is the best free software to find and remove viruses etc?

I use AVG Anti-virus free edition and AVG anti-spyware which is of course also free. All the suggestions people have already posted are good.
