Ok i just installed Linux last night so i'm still trying to figure out what i'm doing, lol. Ok so i stored all my files on another computer on my home wired network. So i was reading up how to setup a network between a Windows computer and a Linux. I found out i need to download "Samba". So i went to download it from this site: http://us1.samba.org/samba/ftp/

First of all i have almost no clue what to download. i downloaded samba-latest.tar.gz figuring it was the right one. After it downloaded i extracted into a folder on my desktop. the problem is i have no clue what to do now. I looked through the folder and couldn't see any install icons.

So my questions are
1)Did i download the right one?
2)if I did what i'm i clicking to start the install?

what distro are you using?

Most distros have a version of samba in their repositories that can be easily installed via their updating/package management systems... If you installed a general desktop system, you might already have it installed.
anyway, let us know which distro you are using and we may be better able to help you.

btw, it is possible to install samba the way you were trying, but it will involve a bit more learning and using of the command line than other ways.

Exactly the same problem that i had :( Uhh ... correction ... still have
But this is a website that i often go to http://tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/softinstall.html, i still don't understand it though ... i need to learn the shell commands to be honest :(
By the way, yes, you did download the right one

OK well i think i figured out whats wrong. from what i learned from my other thread .exe files only work on Windows and the Samba install is .exe SO i'm going to take a wild guess and say i was susposed to install Samba on the windows computer and not the Linux one. i was trying to on the Linux one.
