Default Harddrive Imaging Backups....

Hello all

So I have a 500GB drive in my laptop with 3 main partitions (7, Vista, Files)

I also have a 1.5 TB external for backups, addt'l file storage.

Is there a way that on 500gb of the external, that I could create a byte for byte, bootable image of my laptop's drive, including the partitions, so that if my laptops drive crashes, I can reimage the backup right onto a new drive and boot up just as the system had been?

I did this once before when I was upgrading my 250 -> 500GB, but is there a way to use just one part of the backup disk, instead of the whole thing. I'm totally comfortable using a bootable disk environment for it - I'm pretty sure I had to do that last time.
