If you get student cards, you will find you will be able to get it very cheaply. My mate picked up Vista for 40 the other day, just get an NUS card..

I'd consider to obtain Windows XP via newegg. The prices are often good. Actually, the Home Basic Vista is on sale at $129 for the upgrade here.
