i recently returned my laptop to factory settings, i wish to know if this totally erases all previous data and returns your system to exactly how it was when first purchased. there are many 'cabinet files' in the my computer folder and i would like to know if these where originally there as i don't recognise them

There will be data on the drive that is recoverable, you need a programme like Darik's Boot And Nuke first, then run your restore disk, though even after that good forensics may be able to recover scraps.
