Is it even worth installing Ubuntu for me?

I wanted to install the Realtek drivers because I have a 5.1 surround sound setup which is not working by default with ALSA (only the front two speakers can be heard). Is there a way I can configure ALSA, or something easier like that?
I also wanted the drivers since I have my PS3's audio running IN to my computer and OUT through my 5.1 setup (I use my monitor for both PC and PS3), and there is no sound coming through from my PS3 at the moment. It works under my XP partition though, but I have the Realtek HD Audio drivers installed there. Will this setup work under ALSA?
(Sorry if these are totally noob questions. I'm still new to this.)

Hi,

Right now I don't know of a way to run your PS3 sound through Ubuntu. You might find some help with it online, but I don't know of any.

For help with using tarballs. I would do a google search for 'installing tarball on ubuntu' w/o quotes, and you should get some good answers.

Cheers!
