Default Directx 11 and 9

I just built a new gaming rig, and installed directx 11. I bought an old game that required directx 9, wouldn't run on 11. I installed directx 9 and it worked. Does this mean my computer is now using 9 all the time, or are both 11 and 9 functioning? I don't want to sacrifice performance on newer games because I'm using 9 only. I don't really know what directx is

DirectX is a collection of APIs that handle various multi-media tasks. Yes, DirectX 11 will continue to work when it's called upon. When you install, or run games through Steam, it will automatically upgrade, or install the required DirectX version.

Some games like Crysis 2 require a separate DX11 and texture patch, in order to take advantage of DX11.
