Desktop Not Recognizing

So when i plug my camcorder into my desktop, normally a computer would automatically recognize it as a new hardware and its some what of a plug and play. Correct me if i m wrong. But when i plug it into my desktop, the computer doesn't react to it. So i m assuming that the driver for the firewire port is not installed? If my assumptions are correct how do i go about finding the installation file to install the driver. If my assumption is incorrect, how do i get it to work?

Thanks

well i have a 3chip that i used to record footage, and a 1 chip to upload, neither camcorders are responsive, but when i plug both into my laptop for the first time it works. The first 3 chip is a panasonic gs320, and the second 1 chip is jvc- GR D33U.
