Computer shuts off when reinstalling windows

I have a gateway m-series laptop that was running fine until I decided to format the hard drive and reinstall windows just because there was a bunch of junk on it. When I put the disk in and reboot the computer from cd everything seems fine it starts going through the install and stuff but then it just randomly shuts its self off during install sometimes during the beggining and sometimes when its almost complete. Well after trying about 30 times with it shutting off it finally installed but the problem now is that I can barely play any games at all on it. For example when I get on farmville the game is lagging so bad its almost impossible to play so is any other game i've tried to play on it starcraft, world of warcraft, etc. Ive made sure my video card driver is up to date and all these games were running fine before the install. What could this be?

Go to Gateway's support site and download any needed drivers such as chipset, sound, video, LAN, etc.

Are you running on battery or external power supply when doing this?
I would run on power supply to make sure everything is running at full speed and so the battery doesn't run out half-way through.
