Default Auto Updates for XP gone wrong....

Apparently something in my most recent automatic update from Microsoft for Windows XP went wrong. On attempting to install the updates during shut down, it got hung up on the 1st of 3 or 4 updates and stayed there in what appeared to be an endless loop. Since then, the system continues to try to install this garbled download during shut down and hangs up all over again. I'd like to remove the aberrant file but I don't know where to look for it. 'Anybody got any ideas?

Try starting up in safe mode with networking and re-running Microsoft Updates. Hit F8 during startup to enter safe mode...
