Default 5.1 audio on ubuntu through hdmi

I have my htpc with an asus p7h55-m pro mobo and i3 cpu, with onboard audio and video card. I have my htpc hooked up to my av receiver through hdmi, but i can not get sound through all of my speakers when i go to the sound setting in ubuntu 10.10 the only option that will play any sound is the hdmi stero output setting, when i choose the 5.1 setting no sound comes through my speakers. If i do choose the hdmi stero outrput the audio only comes out of the front two speakers and sub, which makes since since it is the stero setting. How would i get surround sound through the hdmi cable. any help is greatly appreciated! thanks!

Hi

The first question that I have is why you are running Ubuntu on your htpc, but that isn't important at the moment. I guess the next question more along your lines is what mixer are you using in Ubuntu, is it AlSA, or a different mixer? Also, have you made sure that surround sound works on your pc period.

Well to answer first question because it is free. I am really not sure what mixer I am using it is just the original one that came with it. After you asked though I d/l ASLA, and it surround sound should work, it has ports for 5.1 surround, but i would like to utilize the HDMI because of my a/v receiver

Hi,

Let me ask you a couple different questions. What programs are you using to run your HTPC, are using something like XBMC, or Mythbuntu. I would like to see the output for the following commands.

Code:
aplay -l

aplay -L
Cheers!
