Well it all started last Friday when my $600 snowboard setup was stolen from my home mountain. There were really no leads up until now. Somebody made a new myspace account posing as me, he was talking shit and saying he has my snowboard. I was wondering if i can trace his IP and figure out who it is and contact the Police accordingly. If i cannot, will the Police be able to do anything more than me?
Thanks |

The Police should be able to. I have yet to see anything but scams when it comes to other things getting IPs from Myspace. The police can get a court order making Tom give the IP that was posted from.

Yes, contact the authorities first.
Alternatively, you could try this. 1. Buy a webhosting account 2. Enable statistics 3. Host a picture on your website 4. Link to it <img src="url of the picture"> etc... on your myspace 5. Go to your CPanel, and look at the statistics. Every person that visits your myspace will download that picture from your webserver. Whenever that picture is accessed from the webserver, the statistics will log the IP of the person downloading it (as well as other information such as type of browser, etc...). This will show EVERYONE that visits your myspace account though, so it may not be very useful pin-pointing it though. It may be useful to authorities however, as it will give them a place to look before the subpeona goes through to myspace. |
