I'm surprised no-one has mentioned it already, but I use gaim. It's like what trillian would be if trillian didn't suck.

Gaim

Gaim is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, and Zephyr networks.

Gaim users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time.

It works on Windows as well.

On this poll, i'm suprised it doesn't include the oldest and most widest used system for chatting: IRC

IRC is so awesome, just because of it's architecture, much more fun then these messengers.

i voted for msn i used msn and yahoo messenger.

i tried IRC once, but i had too much trouble with it, and i figured it just wasn't worth it
