I am writing an Instant Messenger and need to learn how to use the AIM, MSN Yahoo, ad ICQ Protocols, could someone please advise me?

hmm download trillian, the go to connections, and to your luck the servers are there. Try google for the protocols, im sure there out there.

Oh and GAIM i think is open source, you could dig thru that.

and how do I authenticate and send and recieve IM's and so on?

Aah.. what do you mean in which file? The ports listed in Trillian are:

login.oscar.aol.com Port 5190 - AIM
login.icq.com Port 5190 - ICQ
messenger.hotmail.com Port 1863 - MSN
scs.msg.yahoo.com Port 5050 - YAHOO

That's what it states in connection preferences.
