I have Windows XP. Microsoft has a thing you download and it would tell you your Vista experience, I tried searching but no luck

Never heard of it, only thing i know is the vista upgrade advisor. Cant really see any point in a vista experience rating, when your not runnning vista, it just seems pointless.

Depends what version you want, but 1GB would probably be fine..

Vista is really, really not all as RAM hungry as people make it out to be. 1 GB will more than suffice for all but the most hardcore games.

Just run the upgrade advisor then, that will tell you the weak areas of your system.
