I wish I had done that 15 years ago, grabbed a back pack and seen the world, I would say trains as theres plenty of them and you can go just about anywhere on them, I would take a friend or partner if possible as its not good to be traveling abroad alone at this present time, also try to keep to yourself and stay around public places, and stay in under the fall of darkness. hope you get sorted and have a great time, good luck

ooh good to know. That might be a problem going from London to mainland Europe with the change in currency or at least make things a bit more difficult.

But anyways, in the UK is it recommended to bus and cab it since the trains don't seem to be a good option?

Yeah using a train is always a pretty good idea.
But there are some really cheap flights too. Check out companies like RyanAir.
Cheap flights, service of course isn't that great (no food if I remember correctly) but that doesn't really matter if you are flying for less than 5 hours.

I was going to suggest train just for the views out there, they are quite nice from all I have seen in pictures.

Look into a Eurorail pass(or whatever they're called now), I'm pretty sure you have to purchase them before you leave and activate them once there, unlimited distance within a timeframe (it was two months when I was there)

Join the Youth Hostel Association (if you're elligible age wise) cheap accomodation for a tight budget.

Get a copy of Fromers Guide to Europe, good tips and stuff in there.

Keep your money and passport ultra safe, money belt inside clothes is good (even when sleeping)

i travelled around europe in a ford escort. ate, drank and slept in the thing from feb 12 to march 31st. went from gloucester uk to keiv ukraine. only stopped sleeping in it in poland when the temps started dropping to around -16 degrees C. best part of the trip was when we went to chernobyl. Pripyat was crazy so big and lonely.

I've not read all the posts in this thread so I might be repeating some advice.

Generally the best way to get around europe is with trains and a travel card, IIRC there is a travel card that will pay for all services around europe, (UK excepted).

in the UK it's generally best to travel longer distances by rail, (unless you can hire a car) which for very long trips can work out cheaper than public transport.

for crossing the channel from England to mainland europe there are three options, land, (eurotunnel), sea and air.

air will be the most expensive generally, but if you want to go from uk -> italy it'll be cheaper than train the whole way or ferry and train.

personally, I'd go with the ferry option if I were you because it's a bit of a novelty.

do you have anywhere you'd like to go yet?

would you like any suggestions of things that you should perhaps try to see whilst you're in europe? what times are you going?
