I'm happy with my Sandisk Sansa c250. It's got a more unique look, 2GB is good for me, a screen, does what it needs to do (play music), cheaper than the shuffle and competes with the nano basically. Expandable with a Micro SD card if needed. No software needed. It's got a voice recorder and FM tuner, but I don't need those. It's in my car, so I turn on my car radio if I want radio. The last time I recorded something it was on a higher quality mic...
