Not exactly. It's a tool by which you can keep your memories of the school year. It's also handy when you need to look up someone but you don't know anything other than their name.

i got some random cheapo book and got people i knew to sign it before school was over. i think i got a few signed during exams aswell. just do it when you can.

The signing of the year book is an important event for most, other's will get the book for memories of the good times they had with friends.
