interesting point to bring up the war... (especially since Nik lives on an American base in Germany, (American presence in Germany established in the war)...

It's amazing how many people do think like Nik is describing, as to whether something is worth doing compared to the cost of doing it.

If america had joined the Allied war effort in 1939 when it started for the rest of the world, do you really think it would have gone on for so long, do you think as many people would have died? would 3000 people have died in a few hours trying to take a beach that wasn't even occupied when the alies first asked the Americans to join the war effort...

There are far to many people who live on a moral high ground of supposed rights and freedoms but think that it's not worth the cost to get involved when they see things going on that goes against their beliefs.
If you saw an old lady being robed you'd do something about it even at your own risk, or would it be because you see that happeneing? does the distance away from Iraq, and the relative comfort of your civillised surroundings meant that you are happy to rest in your own comfort and let others suffer, (so long are you are OK what's the problem?).
and what about the time when the day comes that your freedom is endangered, I suppose you'll be crying out for people to help you, but if you won't help anyone, then why should anyone help you?

IMO if saddam was that bad he should have been taken and captured after the first gulf war whilst there were troups in the country and whilst he was commiting these attrocities, not some ten years later once he's had time to do a little more evil...
I 100% agree, Germany wanted to go futhur in 91. Bush said no, so now we are here again. We could of tooken out Saddam then and the world would be happy now, British have military bases in Germany as well. We got bases in the UK, Portgual, and Spain. WE got bases in Turkey (We did) Greece (we still might actually) frankly US didn't get invovled because of WW1. Lots of americans would going with what Geogre Washington said "WE shouldn't get invovled in any tangling treaties" America doesn't wanna get invovled in european wars because it doesn't benefit them andthats the truth. Either way Saddam was worth it in 1991 cause it wouldn't of cost as much he was a defeated man, we didn't have Bin laden and the type as major figure heads, and we had the UN's support.

Both britain and america have bases all over britain...

where I grew up there were a number of american bases in the area,

There was an active airforce base (as in with runways etc) some ten or so miles up the road, (which meant I saw a load of cool american places as a child). closer than that to me (well my parents as I've moved away now) there is another american airforce base, that's just a communications base though... (that's where my girlfriends dad worked)...
and about seven miles away there is (or was) another base, I think that was a supply base though...

all of that in such a tiny area of britain, (I think the bases were no more than ten miles apart from each other) each have (or had -only one is still opperational) good road links, one had a private rail link into it, and the other (not the air base) has a nice landing strip anyway (just in case?)...

Britan has bases all over the world as well. (I don't think that there is many in america, due to it's isolation from other landmasses)...

This is what makes me laugh when people complain that britain and america work too closley as a team and that britain should concerntrait on working with europe...
Britain and america have worked as a close military team for years, they have bases and ties in each others country and they share research readily...

to put it simply Britain works so closly with America because there is simply no ways to cut ties effectivly! it's a match that was made a long time ago, and it's a match that was made with very close ties in each others countries.

Gotta go back to the time. In 1775 three notable powers, England, Spain, and France. In 1783 or so there was Colonies, Spain, France, 1801 or so there was Colonies and Spain. But America had grown basically out of England, and even with the two wars (Revoluation, and War of 1812 we still got a along) they were as my teacher says "Gentlemen wars" One side fights the other, one side loses, one side wins. However when deciding how which Language should be spoken in America colonies at first the choices were Hebrew, German, and English then German and English and I believe German lost out by ONE VOTE. So if that would of been the case then we'd be more closely alied to Germany.

I haven't never heard of any British bases in America... Maybe in Canada and so forth but not America. Either way the language is what ties us so close. Look at all the English speaking countries they are pretty much one team, Aussies, Canada, America, and UK. There are African countries that are primarly english though as well. But either way, America and Britian have always worked closely together.

You & I have lived & worked in the same areas, during WW2 my mother & lived in Huntingdon with my Gran, my father sent us there away from the blitz, & about 7 miles up the road was Alconbury, all USAF in those days, Flying Fortesses, combined with RAF later, on a base 3 miles on from there, were Liberators, just a mile up the road from where Ilived, was a US POW camp holding Germans who were escorted out to repair pavements & roads, we kids never went short of chewing gum, later, after we returned to Portsmouth, I was called up, & was stationed in Lincolnshire in the RAF at Stenigot, 11 miles from Lincoln, one Xmas we were snowed in by 8 foot snowdrifts, & had to have food supplies dropped to us from RAF Manby, so yes,I'm very familiar with a wide area with the fens & East Anglia, m'duck, as they would say, those names familiar?, more to tell by PM's if you'd like.

No, I lived in a town called Brackley, in the south of Northamptonshire, (bordering Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

here's a map with the base locations marked...

It is weird how these bases clump together...

Different woodstock... the hippy woodstock referes to the festival site in America where Jimi Hendrix plays...

the woodstock there is just outside of oxford and filled with somewhat more conservative folks!
