I wasn't really expecting everyone to give me crap...I thought CF could actually stay on topic, but I shouldn't have expected so much.

umm... no. the ONLY think AWD gives you is more traction to get going. Once you are moving, you are gonna have the same amount of traction as any FWD car. they will corner at the same speed before spinning out. AWD only gets you going and gives 95% of drivers a false sense of security.

How many times in this thread did I say that it is a good safety net?

AWD will definitely lessen your chances of spinning out.

Do you even drive RubberChicken? After driving both AWD and FWD in the same conditions I'm pretty sure I can say that AWD is safer.

Once I was in my friend's Explorer driving home after a snow storm. His car could barely stay on the road, until I noticed that it was actually a 4WD Explorer. I turned all time 4WD on and there was SO much less slipping.

Nah, even on a gasoline powered car, that's ok. Depends on the engine really I guess. My Ford could easily go another 100k and its at about 115k now. Mine might be a bit more solid then the engine in that car though...

To UK's statement, I don't know why older people have any more right then young to own a car. I hate when people prejudge young people. It's usually only older and uneducated people that do that, which makes me feel a bit better when someone says something to me or my friends regarding maturity when we aren't doing a single thing wrong...

Any time your foot is on the gas peddle, AWD is better. And ice, you need AWD for ice to get moving... or studded tires would work too.

BECAUSE ITS REAR WHEEL DRIVE!!! Look, I know how cars work. ArizzX knows even more. DJ Chris know a lot, and Root knows a lot as well. YOU DON'T. AWD is only gonna help you get going compared to any other drive train. Thats all it does compared to the others. The reason RWD is unstable on slippery surfaces is the same reason the wheels on a shopping cart face backwards instead of forward. Its more stable to be pulling than pushig.

I've driven in the snow a TON. I've driven 4x4, RWD, FWD and FWD with stability control.

The RWD is the worse. Why? The car is being pushed. The next worse is the 4x4. Its fine going straight, but when you turn its very resistant because there is not front to back differential in it. There is in AWD though. Driving with the 4x4 on greatly increase the chance of flipping in a turn unless you have some wheel slip. The next best is the FWD. Handles nice, and I don't have to worry about changing anything form nice pavement to snow and it handles nice. The best is the FWD with the stability control. Even when you try to make the wheels slip you have trouble doing it. I'll take an intelligent FWD system over a AWD unintelligent system any day.

edit- remember, no matter how intelligent the systems on car are, you can't beat the basic laws of physics. You hit black ice in ANY car and you will lose control. A good driver can make a really unstable car, such as a 4x2 Ford Explorer more stable than a bad driver can in a nice Subaru. Buy a cheap car and use the extra money on defensive driving classes and driver skill classes. You seem like you could use them.

personally i dont agree with that choice of car for various reasons but im not going to beat up on your choice of car enough people have done that already and pretty much i would just be repeating what people have said
only thing i will say to everyone here is someones perception of luxary is subjective , meaning that if i drove a rolls royce or bently then im not going to think that that audi is anything too luxary however if i just drive some beat up old for fiesta or escort or something then obviously i am going to think that that audi is luxary

Anyway If you really cant think think of enough reasons to conivnce your dad right now that you need a car then to put it simply you dont need a car and cant justify having one . Sure you would like one just like i would like a car (and a hell of a lot of other things with that ) however you dont need one . Wait a few months get a job or something or wait till college then you might need a car to get to work or college . Plus then your dad might have even more money to spare at that time and there might be a better choice of car on the market at that point

My first car at 16 was a 94 honda accord w/ well over 100k miles, it was a hand me down from my parents. As muz said there is no point in me speaking my mind about the vehicle you are thinking about getting because its been repeated enough. The only thing I am going to say is.. your 16 ..sure you have your drivers license.. what maybe a few months? 6 months? .... you have NO driving experience. An Audi for your first car.. guaranteed speeding ticket with in the year or worse

I guarantee he'll have it wrapped around a tree in 6 months. Which is why I'm trying desperately to set him straight.

I've got a minivan that handles looser than you could imagine. The only work that my parents will get done is getting the brakes fixed and oil changed. and you know what? I don't care. I'll fill it with my drums anyways because its a hell of al or better than walking or a bike.

Are we seriously debating this...AWD is clearly, clearly, clearly, the best system for snow/ice. Let's do a google "best cars in the snow":
http://www.forbes.com/2007/11/01/car...s_slide_2.html
I'm pretty sure all those vehicles are AWD.

RubberChicken - Aren't you the same age as me, if not younger? Have you ever been in a car with me? I don't exactly understand what you're trying to say here...

We are beating a dead horse here...it is time to close this thread...where are the sensible mods? We've been off topic since about page 2 as well.
