If you're not going to bother with modifying the car, just buy the drop in ones. They free up the flow of air and fit in the OEM filter area.
I hear a lot of people complain that K&N overoils their filters. I've heard AEM dry-flow is good.
 
Just get a drop in for like $30...
I haven't had a problem with mine. I've cleaned it once and I've put about 60,000 miles on it.

Yeah, it's just like that. I can't understand it either. The easiest way is to make your own or buy a used one for cheap. I got a carbon fiber Injen CAI for my E36 for $100 from a guy at bf.com. Totally worth it.
