dude, you should have put them in properly for dual channel- one in blue and one in orange. each one of those is almost always a seperate channel.

that's true, dual channel would require them to be separated by at least one slot which should help keep them cool.
 
There are some motherboards where dual channel would be in slots right next to each other.

You missed this, the pic is of similar ram but that is not the board.
on this particular board there was only 2 slots

@OP, they shouldn't have been touching, one of the slots may be set on an angle on the board maybe?

Heat spreaders are fine, I always try to rig a fan (or you could buy a cooler) to blow over my modules, there is usually enough room on the m/board tray to fit a 80mm fan to blow down the length of the modules (on ATX anyway)
