Default Political Philosophy

So...

I'm currently taking a political science class, being taught by a political philosopher. Each day after I class I don't exactly feel like I'm learning or being taught...but I feel a little more enlightened. I'm not learning facts but coming to realizations about religion, philosophy, life and truth.

My professor has this incredible understanding and this demeanor of the world and America. He doesn't impose his views but always argues against yours for the sake of making you realize...

I'm not trying to troll or cause dissidence, but I wanna just wanna rant about some stuff after today's class and the recent political climate.....(sorry mods if this isn't allowed)

I think majority of Americans are extremely narrow minded (me included). It is always definitely about ME. My wants and my needs.

Our professor makes a strong emphasis on how everyone in America should try be enlightened. They should try to be virtuous, strive to be educated. They cannot just abide to one side of the political spectrum.

I hate that the great majority of people think America is a Democracy.

I hate how people vote for Senators and Representatives that appeal to what the people wants and interests are.

I wish people in America can become more selfless.

I hate the idea of Democracy IN America.

Why? Because Americans cannot handle democracy. We are becoming more selfish and narrow minded; it clouds our interests and wants. Senators and Reps should not do what the majority want because I believe our morals are wrong. The people SHOULD vote on representatives that do not succumb to the majority's interests BUT do what is BEST for overall society. But then again...no one is going to vote for a Senator that says "America your being stupid and selfish, let me do whats right". Corruption is not only in the house and senate but also in the people. This is why I believe democracy can ultimately not work...

Discuss..

Many people have said this over the years time and time again. Not one of them has come up with a better, more readily accepted solution.

Ok a few things, first, America is not a Democracy but a mix of a Democracy and Republic (leaning towards Republic). Second, "overall society" brings up a ring of socialism, and how can we cater to the minority and throw out the majority? Third, like berry said, there is only criticism but no readily available solutions.

Why are you so afraid of the word socialism? There are great aspects of socialism that we employ in our society today.

Ok because of the Karl Marx thread I won't fully go crazy about what you just said. But, nothing in life comes for free so how does socialism work?

When you're older you'll understand.

I thought socialism/marxism/communism really only appeals to the young?

How does socialism relate to Marxism and communism?

See, that's the thing I hate about people like you. You come in here with your talking points and automatically assume one thing leads to another. You draw a single ounce of truth and use that to spin whatever message you're trying to send across. Because of that, people can't have a meaningful discussion with you. They just can't, and I won't.

I'll tell you this though. It's easy to talk the talk. It's easy to say outlandish things when you're under a roof living comfortably. It's easy to say people can't land a job because they're too lazy. It's easy to do all of those things.

It's not easy when you actually begin to encounter hardships first hand. It's not easy when your elderly mother or father are sick and you don't have the cash to send them into a hospital. It's not easy when you have to pick between your health and your family. It's not easy at all.

So wipe that smug smile off your face and don't think you're so clever with that little response.

Ok now let me respond. My uncle recently passed away (2 weeks ago) and was poor and could not afford to go to the hospital for his cancer. He was provided a stay at a FREE hospital payed for with tax dollars, given 5 doctors to take care of him FREE of charge, and medication that he otherwise couldn't afford, Hospice even provided a counselor to talk to his children about death. So how can we complain about healthcare when he got better free healthcare than some who pay out of pocket or with their insurance?

^ You think that's what happens to everyone? Don't be naive. You know full well that not everyone gets that treatment.
