MS will now require xp users to install SP2 whether they like it or not

I think its a deep inner fear that somehow by accepting help from Microsoft they are becoming a tool. When Microsoft gives out a Service Pack which installs easily, requires only a reboot and gives amazing Security its bad. But when Linux releases a new version of a Distribution, without even a Service Pack's Level of change in anything, certainly not SP2's level of change in anything, its fabulous and having to reinstall your entire computer for it is well worth it.

If Windows had a base like Linux, it would not be needed to require install of SP2 - but it doesn't - and for most people who have no idea about SP2 the install of it will be of great help. For those others who don't want it for some strange reason - think of it as a challenge to your ability to stop it installing :D

My take on SP2...

I don't use it because of my beta testing activities. Gives me a hard time. But having said that, let me fill in the blanks about bad installs of sp2. People can't read the simple instructions.
Before installing sp2 you must:
EXIT ALL RUNNING PROGRAMS. This means no jamming to tunes while installing sp2.
Run a virus scan and correct any problems it reports. Afterwards exit the anti virus program. Don't disable it, you'll wind up having to reinstall the AV program.
Run AD/SPY/MAL ware scans and correct any problems it reports. Any AD/SPY/MAL ware blockers you have running need to be exited from.
Run disk cleanup on the boot drive. Check ALL of the boxes and let it run.
Run a defrag on the boot drive.
Go into the msconfig and disable self starting programs.
REBOOT
When the system comes back up put the sp2 cd in the cd drive and follow the instructions.
When it finishes the install of sp2 reboot if it doesn't do it by itself.
Now you can find out for yourself why so many people hate sp2.
It beats you over the head about your AV, your auto update settings, and the firewall. It chokes the crap out of your LAN and internet connections. It intrudes in to your every day use of your system worse than Norton ever dreamed of. It's big. It's clunky. It's big brother.
That's it for me. Sorry about the rant but I guess you can tell I'm just not a big fan of sp2. I can tell you how to load it properly. It's up to you as to how it works for you...

zoomtom, as I said earlier, I turned off automatic updates sometime back, & since the date for "forcing" SP2 has been & gone, I have had no notification from that hotch-potch known as Microsoft.
In my opinion the main problem is XP, it's a funny begger at the best of times, probs with installing some games, certain d/loads etc, [not porn, I mean, I DONT go there]

I have been prompted many times to download and install the SP2, but my Automatic Updates are configured so that it will show me the available updates but not download without my permission. I still see it all the time, but I cancel it. I get the other updates though.

People complain about windows being an old operating system? what 4 or 5 years? and then they say how much better linux is becuase it is newer (this is true as i prefer linux) but still, how can windows be made secure if people refuse to put in the patches that are released?
SP2 put a new kernal on windows xp, thus bringing the base operation of win xp up to date.

And SP2 works fine for me, no problems since I put it on.

If you don't want to install it, move to linux and discover a new os that is far superior to windows

The quickest way to install SP2 is to send off to Microsoft and receive their free SP2 CD, Installed it on 5 computers and have had no problems.
I use a free program called "Belarc Advisor" that creates a profile of your computer, that way you can keep up with Microsofts updates, they have downloaded 15 SP3 updates. Heres a link to Belarc.
