I have two MCPs and an MCSE cert. They have definitely opened doors for me. Experience is by far more important, though.

Yeh i was looking into doing the MCSE cert.

One question is it a good thing (will i have enough time) to do this while working full time? I plan on doing an IT traineeship next year and am looking into it at the moment.

I did my MCSE training on Saturdays while I was still working full time. I took the MS tests two at a time when I had finished the related parts of the course. I would suggest taking just 1 test at a time like most people do unless you are really confident that you know the material well. Luckily, I passed all my tests on the first try, but it could get really expensive to have to retake tests (I think they were $100 per test at the time). Just be prepared to give up your social life until you've passed all your certification tests and you should be fine.
