this may be a stupind question

you should be able to do it on your current rig. It's just the faster the system the more currency you are gonna mine.
You can buy hardware that are specifically designed for bitcoin mining.

All this sounds good in theory, but if you're just wondering about it now you're too late to make any real money.

Way too late.

Sure, you can start mining on your video card right away, but long gone are the days when you could make 0.1B per day or so with a mid range graphics card. (I remember those days... they were good.) A good graphics card will give you about 200-300MH/s or so, which will make about 0.00001B a day if you're lucky - that equates to less than a cent at the current exchange rate!

All the serious mining these days happens on large rigs with custom ASICs, which cost a bomb, and are a questionable investment at best at present (unfortunately.)

Of course, if you're just after a bit of fun and to see how the technology works, then go for it - just don't expect to make anything! :)

At that rate, that wouldn't justify the extra wattage and power bill requirements you would be spending letting your graphics card run hard all day.

Exactly. You'd be very lucky these days to ever come close to breaking even on the power you're using.
