And Microsoft was also started in a garage. Its just that people don't think people can do stuff like this because they fear change, and are jealous that they don't have the resources to do it. What would be cool is a video site that would allow you to upload raw video footage that you could do simple edits to like putting in titles, credits, video effects, cutting out and editing the video you want and then publishing it on your site. The same with pictures, being able to upload many pictures and edit them into a slide show with titles, subtitles, etc. You'd probably need someone with good programming knowledge, but you said your friends all knew how, so thats good. Hope that gives you some good ideas. Just go around do research and see what people want that they aren't getting from YouTube, Google video, etc.

Edit: Also, for sound clips too you could make it so people could upload them.

youd need a ton of money, loads of time and effort, loads of helpers, loads of luck, etc. thats if you wanted to compare to youtube.
if you dont mind a smaller version, for friends, family, and cf, and whoever then its a good idea. i just feel youtube is too successful. why would anyone want to host elsewhere
