Here's a site to get free guitar tabs:

http://www.mxtabs.com/

I've seen my cousin use it, he plays the guitar. It's really the only one I know of. I'm sure if you do a google search you will come up with tons of sites.

http://www.freeguitarvideos.com/ is really good for novices (still one after 3 months ish...)
http://www.freelicks.net/ is also pretty good.

if you ordered a "kit" with a guitarr amp, extra strings, and that stuff, throw away the cord they give you, and buy a nive hefty monster cable. that is $20 well spent, and will help reduuce feed back and noise a lot.

I would also get guitar pro. it is a really good program, and you can get free music for it at http://www.911tabs.com

Mxtabs.net was shut down. It was the best tab site back in the day. Right now I use www.ultimate-guitar.com. It has a lot of the same tutorials that mxtabs used to have but whether or not you use this site depends on whether or not you want to learn how to read real music or just tablature. I prefer tabs because you can find any song online for free. The only downside is that you have to listen to the song to figure out the timings.

Ultimate-guitar is pretty good. I learned to play some songs pretty well in a couple of months, but I learned in drop tuning which some would say is a bad thing. But I just play for fun. Learn to play in standard, then move to drop, and you're good. But it took me like a month no not sound like total crap, so don't get discouraged.

Yeah, same here. I just started to sit down and plug away like one hour a day and gradually got better at it. As long as you stay on a schedule with it you'll see rapid improvement.
