I agree. Not every one needs an HD DVD player and for most normal DVDs are fine. If you ask me, it's just like Sony to shove their own proprietary formats down the throats of consumers. Look at the PSP and it's use of Sony's MemoryStick Pro. They could've easily gone with SD or Micro SD, but instead they had to use a proprietary format so you HAD to buy their overpriced memory cards in order to store data on the PSP.
I don't think it was a bad idea for Sony to include a blu-ray player in the PlayStation 3. It enables higher storage capacities for future games that may not fit on the DVD format, For the price, it's actually a pretty good deal and it gets the format into more homes.

Bloatware is a problem with almost all computer manufacturers, though it's true that Sony went overboard with the Vaio. One of my family members has a HP/Compaq computer and it came with a million AOL trials, Norton Anti-Virus trials and other pointless things. The desktop was filled with it and it included loads of games from (WildTangent?) that were all demos.

@neodude: I laughed hard at that comment. Just because you don't have a high-definition TV doesn't mean you can't experience the games available on the PS3. I have a standard definition 19" piece of junk bargain bin TV and I still enjoy it. Sure, blu-ray's wouldn't be worth but it that doesn't mean you shouldn't buy a PS3 at all if you don't have a HDTV.

I don't know about that. Yes i'm very much aware of Beta Max as I mentioned it before in this thread. Right now the market stands at 75% Blu Ray and 25% HD DVD. I think its pretty obvious the undecided are probally going to go with Blu Ray. Even with the slightly increased prices the stand to make even more that way.

As alvino mentioned, Sony loves their Memory Stick format. Have it in both my notebook, and my television - all manufactured by Sony.
Name any pre built system from dell, gateway, compaq etc that doesn't come with a bunch of crap.

I myself, even though I've recently bought a HD TV, are happy with DVD's upscaled through the PS3.

Yes theres a difference between watching a HD film, and a SD film, but does it spoil the experience in any way? Not really.

I did want BluRay to be the sucessor though, purely for space.

I still wouldn't buy a standalone player from either. A - the war isn't completely over yet and B - the technology is still becoming more and more developed.

I'm so happy Warner Bros. made this decision. Probably one of the best. Blu-Ray has a lot more storage compared to HD DVD. Although a few more gigs, it really makes a difference for special features and such. Warner Bros. is the biggest supplier of DVD's right now.

Right now, dual layer DVDs have more than enough storage for most PC games. If they have to use 2, that's 17 gigs of space.

A reader for the computer would be a waste IMO though. Might as well wait for a burner.

EDIT:

also if blu-ray cd drives were 80ish dollars i would buy one, you could watch Blu-Ray movies on them in high def

Yeah, but can you imagine the HDD space that would take up if games were bluray!! Game companies would take advantage of it, but a 1-2TB HDD would have to beceme standard, lol. My 250 gets filled as it is.

bigger HDD's, bigger games, bigger OS's, it all comes at once, you wont notice the size differences in ratios
