How to record a piano?

The links broken...

I would buy or loan some capacitor/condenser mics for starters with stands. The condenser mic's sound so much better.

Open the piano and experiment with the position of the first mic near the opening. You could then place the 2nd inside the piano, the 3rd up above the pianist and the 4th in the back ground.

Second best would be to get two matched condenser mics and set the up 'spaced stereo' near the opening/in the piano.

Mix and track these into a DAW and play with them. You'll spend most of the time setting up the position of the mic's but this is half the fun.

With the dynamic mic it'll depend on the room but place near the opening of the piano.

Whatever you go with try and get the hottest signal you can without peaking and leave 3bB headroom. And experiment!!!!!

Send me a clip when your done...

Flat piezo are good. Place one in the center of the landing where the lid meets the body above the keys. Another free standing mic at the far end pointed back at the hammers. That pics up the strings without getting the keys and pedal noise.
