Is your personal hardware not enough to satisfy?

This is one of the most truthful statements in the world.
My friend who is a female, brought her computer in to best buy.
They told her that it was ALL messed up, that she needed a new HDD, that she also needed to purchase a external HDD, that she had to buy more RAM.
It was all just ridiculous, there is more she "needed" to buy.

I am surprised the guy didn't just say she had a squirrel nut in her ram chip that needed to be replaced.

A few days went by, WE brought the computer in. Me putting it on the counter, telling the guy what the problem was. He then told her everything I told her before she went to best buy.
(Take note this is the same guy.)
She only needed more RAM and that she was trying to run Vista on an XP system.

I understand everyone has to make a profit, but they take advantage that most people that bring them their computer are not computer literate.

The only person that I know that is qualified to work at GeekSquad and does; is Rohan.

Think about it this way...

how many people on this forum have started their own home repair business?

how many succeeded? of those that did succeed, it was the ones with the proper and relevant experience and knowledge that were able to make a proper go of it.

those that don't have the proper experience and knowledge to fix a PC in a persons home for them are the ones who can't start their own business and who can't take all the money that the customer get charged. instead they end up working for the geek squad.

logically, if you could fix computers and you could charge $50 an hour for the time you spent fixing them, you would charge that and take that money to the bank. you wouldn't go work in a store where the customer is charged the same amount, you're doing the same work to fix the problem, but seeing less than half the money...

(of course there are always those who can't start their own business, but do have the knowledge who may be working for the geek squad).

generally though, nobody is going to aspire to work for the geek squad, it'll be a job that people get to earn a wage. not a job that they get because they are extraordinarily passionate or knowledgeable about computers.

before anybody tells me that they work for geek squad and know what they are doing and take pride in their work etc... there are, (of course) exceptions to every rule.

I see what you're saying but if the market does become oligopolistic based around a few major firms (such as Geek Squad) then the future of independent business and technicians is very limited and eventually that'll push people who are very knowledgeable into these dead weight firms because their potential clients can't see the wood for the trees in the computing market.

thats exactly why i even bother in to going to BB..

i respect the company, i used to think they were the greatest electronics place Ever, then i found Tiger Direct and the Egg.

Everytime i go in there i feel obligated to help people who are being lied to from the employees, sometimes the employee just dosnt know how to help, or they lie trying to get more money spent in the store. I understand its there job, but still.

a little bit ago a friend was having issues with her PC playing WoW on max, it always had played on max till recently, i told her that her 9800GTX was failing because HW monitor was giving really high Temps close t0 100C. Told her if she gets a 4850 (she had a 500w PSU) that it would be night and day between it and her old 9800GTX. She took it to BB to try to get them to install it, it was some deal they had on the 4850, idr what. But they tried to convince her to get a 5870 because they told her that a 4850 couldnt power a 20in resolution. I about FLIPPED.

@ OP I had a similar thing happen in futureshop that I think I mentioned a while back here but when I was looking at a laptop that was near the returns area and I overheard someone getting ripped off big time. They had a bad virus that pretty much rendered the computer unbootable and the guy behind the counter was like the best thing to do in that situation was to just buy a new pc. I think he said that since the computer wasn't bought at that futureshop and he just wanted to make a quick buck off commission. But I ended up just saying to the guy that I could backup all his stuff and fix the computer for under 50$ and after that I was escorted out of the store by security and banned. Lucky for me that futureshop became a bestbuy 3 months later and I could go back.

I just thought of something that would be really funny. If someone bought a brand new computer and got geeksquad to set it up and they come back later and say "yeah we can't do much to save this computer you better off just buying a new one" forgetting that it was just a setup of a new computer.
Although highly unlikely it would still be funny
