Default Does this type of thing have a name?

OK this is kind of hard to explain so I'll just start out with an example.

Take the IGN Network or the Box.sk network, they both seem to have sites that act like smaller sites of a bigger network.

Under the IGN Network, you have http://askmen.com, http://collegehumor.com, http://askmen.com etc.

Each site in the IGN network refers to being part of the IGN network.

Under the Box.sk Network you have, http://Astalavista.box.sk, http://neworder.box.sk/, http://juice.box.sk/, etc

Even though each site in the box.sk nework is a subdomain they still refers to being part of the box.sk network.

What I'm asking is there a name to this type of trend? Are they merely sites that are so proud of who is hosting them that they need to name the network or is this some kind of clever webhosting scheme to help with visitors? Either way I curious if there is a name to this?

Thanks.

In this case, IGN would be the parent company of all these websites. These sites would be labeled as subsidiaries.
