DIY steering wheel stand

So when Gran Turismo 5 finally comes out (I preordered it), I think I might get a Logitech G27 racing wheel to play it. I've seen the seats that are supposed to work with it and the wheel mounts right to it with no problems. But I'm not really interested in paying $350+ for one, plus $40 for the optional six speed shifter mount. Does anyone know of any plans online for a DIY wheel mount? I'd like to have something more than just a table, something that is adjustable.

Or does anyone have any ideas of what I could build or what I could build it out of? Metal is not really an option since I don't have a welder or know how to weld for that matter.....lol

Get a chair like this. I have the older version with the non-adjustable arm rests. I am just going to get a racing wheel and mount it between the arm rests with wood, clamps and some springs for adjustments.

That seems like it would be a little close doesn't it? Those arm rests don't look very long.

PVC pipe would work fine, but I wouldn't use any smaller than 2" pipe. The smaller sizes tend to be very flimsy.
