Crysis does outdoors beautifully.. but I think unreal has the edge when it comes to tech-styled indoors environments.

Both games will be awesome.. new system will be needed to truly appreciate these games.

Yeah, I can't wait for Crysis. As for it showing the PC's power, you could technically run Crysis on the PS3 or Xbox 360, but it wouldn't be as shiny because of no DX10. Becides, it doesn't matter because the hardware you'll need to run this game with decent graphics will be insane.

There isn't much known about the storyline, but the plot should be well known by now.

Quote:
Set in 2020, you play as Jake Dunn, a United States Delta Force operator. Dunn and his team are sent in to investigate a mysterious meteorite that has crashed into the Spratly Islands, located in the South China Sea. The United States is not the only government aware of the crash; North Korea is also investigating the crash site. The reason this meteorite is being treated as mysterious is due to the fact that it has barely damaged the area surrounding its impact.

As the story unfolds, you (the player) are faced with 3 very different environments or 'acts' as these are also referred to as.

* Env/Act 1: The meteor hits the island, causing the North Koreans to take up military presence and investigate the meteor crash. As a Delta Force soldier, you HALO jump onto the island to see what you can find out for the US Government. During this phase of the game, you'll play in a tropical environment complete with beaches, jungles and tropical villages.

* Env/Act 2: The meteor opens up and flash freezes a large part of the island. Although extremely odd, there's no clear alien threat and so both parties continue to fight it out. The player's main objective becomes to investigate what's happening on the interior of this frozen sphere. Shortly after, both the Korean and US governments come to the realization that this 'mysterious meteorite' is actually an alien craft, and therefore decide to join forces to fight what could be an alien invasion. This phase consists of battling through the frozen jungle as well as on your own aircraft carriers which are located off the coast. The aliens, who are not yet revealed in the story, use machines to battle against the North Korean and US military who are slowly closing in on the source of the what's creating the alien sphere, a 2km alien ship half lodged in the earths surface. The constantly expanding 'freezing sphere' throws the global weather system off balance and causes all kinds of natural disasters including high winds, tornadoes, earthquakes and possibly tsunamis.

* Env/Act 3: As you enter the alien craft, you find yourself not only weightless, but fighting against the actual aliens. Fighting in the alien craft proves difficult due to the lack of gravity. The recoil of your weapons combined with the zero-g environment propel you backwards while leaving your shell casings floating beside you. It has been reported that the animations, as one PC Gamer reporter put it, are some of the best ever seen in gaming [1]. The player will only be suspended in zero-g for only about 1 hour during the game. Crytek has stated the aliens themselves will not be revealed until this part of the game, giving them a certain degree of suspense.

The entire singleplayer campaign/story will last somewhere between 10 and 12 hours. Crytek promise that the game will be very replayable and will give the player the tools they need to be very creative with the way they choose to play.
Sooner or later graphics will become to a point where it's almost photorealistic. There is also some moral grounds we need to cover here. There may be a day where graphics in video games are so realistic that killing a NPC in a FPS will look just as or almost as realistic as killing someone in real life. A line needs to be drawn so we can tell the difference between having fun in virtual reality and killing in reality.

The Nintendo Wii places more emphasis on innovative and immersive gameplay rather than hardcore graphics. The only problem is that developers need to know how to create great gameplay and controls for the Wii. We've all seen how good the Wii's controller can be with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and how bad it can be with Red Steel.

Graphics will also become pushed further as the future comes. Hardware and software will be pushed to its limits as it comes around, so there shouldn't be any worry about that. However, it should not become a priority for developers. Gameplay is the utmost important thing I developer should concentrate on before they start tweaking graphics and framerates.

Like I've always said and believed, gameplay is what makes or breaks a game no matter how crappy or how polished it looks.

I agree. The major difference between the CryENGINE 2 and Unreal Engine 3 is that that Unreal Engine is very flexible to different types of hardware, whereas CryENGINE 2 needs to have the most powerful hardware around or it'll run like shit on a freezing day. That's also why Epic Games is making absolutely a fortune just licensing the Unreal Engine 3. It's easy to use, efficient with hardware and will literally run on almost everything. Gears of War looked absolutely stunning and it didn't even use half of the Xbox 360's power.

powerfuler? heh.
Have you actually taken a close look at the unreal3 screenshots? They are amazing looking... both engines are very powerful.. and Unreal3's engine is also quite new.. it is by no means obsolete.

You can't. HTML isn't allowed. You can post the links for something like YouTube though.

You'd need to see those engines in HD to appreciate it anyway.
