Apart from one problem. He sent a request to the show from Basra to wish her happy birthday because hes serving out there.

The problem with this the request was sent by email if I remember correctly. If it was email and used by something like Gmail, he could easily proxy it and the radio station wouldn't know the difference.

why would he send it through the radio station if he was at home where he can tell her personally

Because then it is done on the radio where it's more dramatic/special.

It's kinda like hiring a sky-writer to write a proposal to your wanna-be Faïence. Yes, you could do it yourself, but the sky-writer is soo much better.
